Steamed Cake 蒸しパン

Steamed Cake 蒸しパン

I am not much of a baker for someone who spends quite a bit of time in the kitchen. Maybe it's because most bakeries in Japan are simply amazing so we don't try to make too many dessert at home. There's a bakery near my house in Yokohama where the fresh cream taste just like heaven. When my friend Ellena asked me if I knew how to make Japanese steamed bread (Mushi Pan), I went to search for a recipe that looked yummy. After the snack judges in the house (my two children) approved, I am happy to share this recipe.

Japanese Pickled Cucumber きゅうりの浅漬け

Japanese Pickled Cucumber きゅうりの浅漬け

The Japanese usually serve several kinds of pickled dish along with white rice as appetizer. Today I am sharing a very simple Japanese pickle recipe that you can also enjoy at home. It's a refreshing side dish, or we call it Hashi Yasume which literally means "chopsticks break." This dish usually contrasts in flavor, texture, and temperature to the main dish and we eat Hashi Yasume between rice and main dish, and between rice and other side dishes, alternatively. Hope you enjoy this homemade Hashi Yasume.

Takikomi Gohan is a Japanese rice dish seasoned with soy sauce. In Japan, depending on season, we add different kinds of vegetable, meat, and mushrooms so you get extra nutrition instead of just plain white rice. People are always creative in regards to the ingredients they put in. If you are tired of just plain rice, I hope you will add this recipe to your repertoire.
