Ahem.  Do you see anything different from my normal pictures?  Anyone?  Well, I hope that was a very obvious question.  The picture is bright, isn’t it?  Spring is finally here and I can take pictures under the natural light as long as I cook during daytime.  It makes a huge difference compared to my posts below.  Ugh look at that curry picture… that was taken at night.

Also, these new pictures were taken by a macro lens.  My husband insisted to buy the lens just for the food pictures.  He’s more serious about my blog than I am, I guess.  With a macro lens I can take closer shots and it’s fun!  But wait, I’m still practicing photography skills so I’ll have to post non-macro lens pictures until I’m ready to share.

Lastly, I’m trying to improve the layout of food.  I just added a fabric here and I think it already looks a lot different from my previous posts.  I’ve been learning SO MUCH from all the foodie bloggers for the past few weeks.  This is my 4th month since I started blogging and I have to start improving my site somehow.

Today’s recipe is crepes.  I love crepes and it’s really easy to make.  Wait, don’t leave my site yet because you can see MORE PICTURES of my delicious crepes (with bright light + new lens + fabrics!), so just stick around for another minute, okay?

Serves: Makes 12-15 crepes
Ingredients
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla extract
  • ¼ tsp. salt
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 ½ cups milk
  • 1 ½ cup water (1 cup for original recipe)
  • Cooking spray for greasing the frying pan
Toppings of your choice
  • Nutella, maple syrup, powdered sugar, bananas, strawberries, blueberries, whipping cream, chocolate syrup, etc
Instructions
  1. In a large bowl, combine eggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt. Mix all together. Here my sweet little assistant is mixing it up.
  2. First add about ¼ cup of flour and mix well.
  3. Add about ¼ cup of milk and mix well till you don’t see any lumps.
  4. Then add ¼ cup of flour again and mix while stirring in ¼ cup of milk. Mix well until you don’t see any lumps. Repeat this process until you run out of both.
  5. Add 1 cup of water. Mix well and check the consistency of the batter. It should be runny unlike the batter for pancakes. I added ½ cup more water to have a good consistency. Please adjust the water according to your mixture.
  6. Heat a large non-stick frying pan over high heat. When it’s getting hot, spray the bottom of the pan with cooking spray.
  7. When the pan is hot, use a ladle to pour the batter in the middle of the pan. Swirl the batter around to distribute it evenly.
  8. When the batter started to dry (see below), shift the pan to rotate the crepe. You can peek and check the color of the bottom side of the crepe. When it looks good, flip the crepe with a spatula and cook the other side until it becomes nice color.
  9. Remove from heat. Serve with your favorite fruits or other toppings.

Here I served the crepes with maple syrup and powdered sugar.

The picture below is with fruits and whipping cream inside.  If you add whipping cream or ice cream, wait till the crepe cools down a bit so it won’t melt.

    I LOVE them :) Hope the recipe was easy to follow ;) and your little assistant is just so adorable. My daughter loves making crepes with me, most times she mixes everything on her own LOL

    And for the record, you got me tonight LOL now I’m the one craving your yummy looking crepes!

    And your pictures are beautiful, I love the new close shots :)

    I also take pictures under the natural light mostly. Been lucky lately with the sun LOL my dining room table is between two large windows so it gets ton of sun :)

      Hi Suzana! YES! The recipe was easy to follow and easy to cook! Thank you so much. My little assistant started to show more interest in cooking and I’m really happy. My son is into “eating” and I am lucky he eats pretty much everything. Enjoy crepe tomorrow since it’s Sunday! I need to hear your detox story more (but I didn’t say I’ll follow. LOL). You are so lucky to have a dining room with 2 large windows! I have 2 windows (like L shape) but there is a balcony/deck above, so it creates shadows. Now I’m creating a little stand in the living room corner where it gets the brightest natural lights. We’ll see how it goes. Soon my living room is turning into Nami’s Studio!

    Nami your site is beyond great for only 4 months old, you’re leagues ahead of me (our blogs are the same age) I need to catch up! I’m with you on improving my photos as well, you’re so lucky your husband is an excellent helper and supporter of your blog. I love your photos already and can’t wait to see the new Macro lens photos. When I started taking photos for the blog I was using my blackberry camera (lazy), now I am using my point and shoot and today my new DSLR should be arriving any minute! Actually I took one crepe picture using my iPhone and posted it on Facebook fan page. Did you see that? I thought it’s not bad at all. Cellphone camera quality is improving a lot!       Thanks Kara! I know, me too. I always bought crepes before, but you have all the ingredients in your kitchen and it’s really easy to make… my daughter who’s 3 (today!) made it (with my help). Very quick and easy! FYI, just two of you, you probably need half portion. :-)

    Being able to use natural light in photos is always a plus. I too have been trying to learn more about food photography since the start of my blog. So much to learn! Your photos are always fabulous though! And as for the crepes…YUM. I love crepes. These have my mouth watering!!

    Your photos are beautiful and from what ieva told me, a good lens makes a big difference not to mention the daylight! For us as the days are longer we don’t have to round our photo shoot before 16p.m like in January (and I get to sleep more)! :) Love the crepes!

      Hi Min! What? You said you are afraid of making crepes? NO WAY. Impossible for someone who cooks such a gourmet food… no way no way. I got good lens but I haven’t got good skills. Lol. It’s going to be a long process to figure out how to take beautiful pictures like yours. Well, I’m also in love with your table setting etc. It’s like an interior design. I love looking at it, but I just don’t know how to do it in my house. LOL.

    I have the same lighting issue as you since my home esp the kitchen does not enjoy good natural lighting. I could not take any good photos using my point-and shoot cam during winter but at least during spring, I can do better. Not perfect still, just better.

    Mmm, these look perfectly divine, and so fluffy! I’ll admit that when I make my crepes, I don’t use so many ingredients – just the basic flour, eggs, salt, water and milk – but it might be nice to experiment by adding vanilla and sugar.     So Liv went to bed last night asking for Crepes for Sunday Morning – but a different one than we usually… I do my crepe search and up comes Nami! If Nami wrote it, then I’m sure it’s good. I’m eager for that spring light (and temperatures) to hit again!
    When we were in San Francisco last summer we stopped at Honey Honey Crepery at 597 Post Street , have you been there? My husband first turned his nose up at the thought of crepes for breakfast (to fufu for him), but ended up saying it was one of the best meals we had on our trip. Your kids would probably love it! Something for every taste.
    In any case, thank you for a “different from ours because ours our getting boring” crepe recipe! All of the recipes are pretty similar, but I will make this one and see what she says. So far we are thinking banana as a filling… we’ll see what evolves!!

      No, I didn’t know about the crepe place. I need to go check it out! We usually go to this Japanese crepe shop in Japan Town for a dessert when we happen to be in Japan Town. Kids love crepes and so do I… Hope the crepes turned out well, if you tried already. :-)

    I was finally able to make crepes a few weeks back! I wanted them for my birthday breakfast, but my grandma didn’t have any clue what we were doing while making them. It was really fun making crepes with her.
    By the way, they were really tasty. We put netella, bananas, strawberries, peanut butter, jellies, and cream cheese on ours. I think my little cousin really enjoyed getting to build her own crepe.
