Spring Mix Salad with Sweet Miso Dressing

Spring Mix Salad with Sweet Miso Dressing | Easy Japanese Recipes at JustOneCookbook.com

I just realized a couple days ago that Labor Day weekend is this coming weekend here in the U.S.  Since I didn’t have time to prepare a new BBQ recipe for this long weekend, I want to share my collection of BBQ recipes at the end of the post today.  If you are new to JOC, perfect!  If you have been my wonderful readers, it’s a good reminder, maybe? :)

Meanwhile, I’m very excited to share this delicious Spring Mix Salad with Sweet Miso Dressing recipe today!

Miso is a very versatile kitchen ingredient and the Japanese use miso just as much as soy sauce for our cooking.

We use miso to make delicious marinade for Miso Cod/Sea Bass, dressing for Seaweed Salad, sauce for Negi Miso Chicken, seasonings for Takikomi Gohan (mixed rice), broth for Miso Ramen, and many more!  Of course you can also make simple miso soup or more complex ones like Tonjiru.

For today’s dressing recipe, I used spring salad mix, but you can use any type of fresh salad leaves, steamed vegetables, or even chilled/grilled tofu!  I tried this dressing with slices of avocado and mint in the salad for the first time and found out that they go really well with miso flavor!  It’s always fun to try something different.

Minute Miso Sweet

Note: The consistency of Minute Miso is more liquid than typical miso.  If you cannot find Minute Miso – Sweet, you can substitute with 1 Tbsp. miso paste (awase miso or white miso preferred) and 1 Tbsp. mirin for 2 Tbsp. Hikari Miso’s Minute Miso.

Hikari Miso products will be available in Amazon soon (some are available already).  You can also buy Hikari Miso products in Japanese grocery stores (my local Japanese and Asian stores carry their product).

Loving this salad. And totally DYING over those grilled clams. We don’t have a labor day menu yet but I’m pretty sure those are a must!

  • john@kitchenriffs August 28, 2013, 6:53 pm

Great looking salad! Perfect for anytime, but quite nice for a cookout. And wonderful roundup of all your BBQ recipes! I really love that corn picture – it’s so perfect. ;-)

  • mjskit August 28, 2013, 7:44 pm

Great ideas for Labor Day weekend! Love that teriyaki burger with the grilled pineapple! A great dish to go with the light salad. Hope you all have a wonderful and fun weekend!

  • Maureen | Orgasmic Chef August 28, 2013, 7:47 pm

I’m so hungry after scrolling through all those photos, Nami!

Now I need to scrounge some food to fill the hole :)

  • Jayne August 28, 2013, 8:03 pm

I’d love to live with you. Every single recipe you’ve highlighted made my heart flutter. Miso is also a staple in my house. I almost never NOT have miso around because it offers such a wonderful savouriness to dishes with so little. I’ve used it as a salad dressing too and you’re right! Miso goes with almost anything.

  • Ash-foodfashionparty August 28, 2013, 9:07 pm

I can’t believe it’s labor weekend already. Your salad looks really good and as I scroll down, can’t tell which one is my favorite and which one I’m gonna try. Love the corn, and miso corn would be a hit.
    Enjoy your weekend Nami.

  • Choc Chip Uru August 28, 2013, 11:28 pm

Nami. I love those kinds of mixed salads – this looks so fresh and the sweet miso dressing sounds fabulous – perfect together in combination with the mixed greens, radishes and yellow cherry tomatoes. And your list of BBQ recipes is a wonderful reminder of all your different delicious posts – my favorite being the lemongrass chicken (I am now looking up that recipe again – hopefully I have everything in the pantry to make that today)!
Hope all is well, dear Nami!

  • Julia | JuliasAlbum.com August 29, 2013, 12:31 am

Nami, I love the idea of using miso for a salad dressing. So unusual and it will make a salad so different than if using just regular salad dressing. Your photos are as always very vibrant and literally pulsating with freshness! Pinned, of course.

  • Brooke Schweers August 29, 2013, 12:43 am

All your food is seriously mouth watering… I think this one looks within my skill level and makes me very excited that sping is about to begin here! The perfect salad to compliment the warming weather :)

  • Archana @ FeedingTheFoodie August 29, 2013, 11:21 am

great line up of bbq recipes and lovely miso dressing. Can you please tell me what Miso is made of?
I love the grilled rice balls – I saw that on food network once and I was fascinated.

    • Nami September 6, 2013, 1:27 pm

Hi Archana! Miso is made from soy beans and usually rice or barley, which are steamed, mixed with koji (a fermentation starter) and left to ferment for six months to five years. The longer the fermentation, the darker and richer the miso is. :) The grilled rice balls are so good! Hope you get to try them one day!

  • Ramona August 29, 2013, 11:26 am

  • veganmiam.com August 30, 2013, 4:05 am

I hope you have a fantastic Labor Day with your loved ones! I don’t think we will be celebrating it here in Spain, but probably check out a beach nearby. I love miso, I’ve used it in dressings, sauces, mac and cheeze (my favorite American meal), hummus and the list goes on. It’s pretty versatile in a lot of vegan condiments and dishes. I used unpasteurized sometimes raw miso. Have you ever tried these kinds before? Mmmmmm these grilled corn look so gorgeous, and I love the idea of miso butter! I think I tried miso sauce over the padron peppers. Omg, yaki onigiri!!!! I love them, these are my favorites!!!!! ^_^ What a beautiful collection of photos, thank you for sharing, Nami!

  • Reese August 30, 2013, 10:37 am

I am now in a kind of sesame paste dressing frenzy for all the salads I prepare (I don’t suppose you remember… I made it based on a Sichuan recipe) but I love miso dressings too. Miso is so versatile and complex, it goes with any dish warm or cold.

This sounds so good! Do you happen to have a ginger dressing like the one Japanese sushi restaurants typically serve with a green starting salad?
