What Is Food Coloring
Food coloring appears in a wide range of commercial food products. It’s also used in home cooking, especially in cookies, cakes, ice cream, and frosting. It can either be sourced from natural or artificial sources.
Natural dyes come from natural ingredients, such as vegetables, fruits, and herbs. This includes turmeric for yellow, beets for red, blueberries for blue, and spinach and matcha for green.
What Does It Taste Like
Artificial food coloring does not have flavor or aroma. Natural coloring from fruits, vegetables, and herbs may impart flavor and aroma.
How To Use
Follow the instructions on the packaging, but a little goes a long way, as the result may create bold and bright colors.
The image above is the red coloring I use for Sakura Mochi. It’s in powdered form and imported from Japan. You may be able to find it at a Japanese grocery store. A tiny bit of the red powder will yield a pretty pastel pink color.
