Nami shares her 5 Must-Have Japanese Kitchen Tools.
I’m starting a new series on our YouTube channel, Tea Time with Nami. In this series, I’ll be talking about all kinds of topics beyond my recipes. I’d like to take this opportunity to answer some of the questions you have and connect with JOC readers and viewers outside of making delicious Japanese dishes.

Hi Melissa!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback!
We are happy to hear you enjoy our website.😊
In your video you taught us the 5 essential cooking tools. I would please like to know the 5th tool. Is it Otoshi Buta? How can I order from US?
Thanks
Hi Kay! You can get only the wooden one on Amazon. You can get both wooden one and the stainless steel adjustable one from here: https://mtckitchen.com/search.php?category=&search_query=otoshibuta§ion=content
I would like to buy a Yukihara saucepan. Who makes one that you can recommend?
Thanks for all the deliciousness you share…
Warmest regard,
Mike
Hi Mike! I get mine in Japan… it’s nothing fancy, they are from a local supermarket but the quality is amazing. I have listed on my Amazon shop, but I don’t know how the quality is… but that’s the only place I know where you can purchase.

Hi Nami,
I got back from Tokyo a week ago and loved all the food so much that I wanted to start learning to make it myself back home. On Googling Japanese recipes, I found this amazing site and I’m so excited to explore it and get lots of recipes together to start my Japanese cooking journey.
Thanks so much!
Hi Kayleigh! I hope you had a great trip to Japan! 🙂 I hope you can find your favorite Japanese recipes on my site and have fun cooking at home! 🙂 Let me know if you have any questions. I’m happy to help!

Hi Cherle! Thank you for your sweet comment, and I’m so happy to hear your granddaughter enjoyed your Nishime! 🙂 I really enjoyed reading your story, and so nice to know men in your family are a great cook. Men in my family have never been a cook (although they all like to eat good food).

I am looking for a good basic wok. Mine is in storage & bought overseas, so I want a good replacement. Can you recommend one? I love your site & am having so much fun experimenting with your wonderful recipes.
Thank you!
Nancy
Hi Nancy! My wok that I currently use is this one: https://amzn.to/2gKtDaO and I talk about it here: https://www.justonecookbook.com/how-to-season-a-wok/
Hi, I got your ebook, thank you!
Can you send me a list with the names of the five kitchen tools.
I want to buy them,
Thank you,
Hi Gladys! Glad to hear you got my eBook! 🙂
1. Fine mesh skimmer: https://amzn.to/2mjIn1x
2. Surikogi & Suribachi (Mortar & Pestle): https://amzn.to/2m6jQwn
3. Long cooking chopsticks: https://amzn.to/2mop6Mn
4. Grater (my favorite one): https://amzn.to/2mrvenp
5. Otoshibuta (drop lid) (same type not available on Amazon)
I was hoping your favorite five might include Benriner. And of course how to avoid cutting your fingers.
Hi Hblnk! That’s a good choice! But it’s not something I would use daily to cook Japanese food. It was hard to pick just five items though. So I focused on things that Japanese home cooks and I would use to cook most of Japanese food. 🙂
Do you have these five tools anywhere on the site? You didn’t list them below the video, and I couldn’t get all the names down. Thanks!
Hi Ruthie! Thanks for your feedback! I just added all the links in the description box below. 🙂
Thank you!~ I wish you could also say where one might purchase these tools … I have not seen them in Asian Markets I frequent. But I’ll look harder!
Hi Barbara! Mostly Amazon. I put the shop links here on my Shop page:

Hi,
I love your site and use it quite often. I just watched your first episode of Teatime and have all the tools except a collapsible otoshibuta. I have a fixed size. I checked online and don’t see a source for the one like yours. Did you find it in CA or Japan?
thanks
Hi Paula! Thank you so much for using my site often! My otoshibuta is from Japan. I go home every summer, so I just got one at grocery store or kitchen store (forgot) for $8-10.
I’ve been looking for otoshibuta on Amazon for years now, but can’t find it. Today someone left a comment on YouTube saying eBay sells it. It might go away but there is another online shop that sells it:
https://www.mtckitchen.com/adjustable-stainless-steel-drop-lid/ ($23 plus shipping….. ugh.)
Hi Nami. Where can I buy the trays you use when prepping your food items? These are the white with blue edges.
Hi Debo! I bought mine from Amazon (https://amzn.to/2FUnxfB). Mixed reviews though, so please read before you purchase. Personally I am okay with this product. I use this for filming as well as my own home cooking. 🙂
