I did not grow up eating cranberries, so my first encounter with cranberry sauce was at a Thanksgiving dinner with my American host family. That sweet, tangy sauce brings back warm memories of the kind family who welcomed me into their home.
Now, whenever we celebrate the holidays at home, I always make my Easy Orange Ginger Cranberry Sauce. It’s my son’s favorite, and the perfect accompaniment to our Smoked Miso Butter Turkey Breast.
Recipe Highlights
This homemade cranberry sauce is one of those recipes that earns a permanent spot on your holiday table:
- Quick and easy. Just 5 ingredients and 15 minutes on the stove. That’s it.
- Make-ahead friendly. Get it done before the holiday rush, and it keeps in the fridge for up to 2 weeks.
- Incredibly flavorful. Sweet, tangy, warmly spiced, and it makes the whole kitchen smell wonderful.
- Fresh and bright. One taste and you’ll never reach for the canned version again.

Ingredients for Orange Ginger Cranberry Sauce
- Cranberries — Fresh is best, but frozen works too. No need to fully thaw—just rinse before using.
- 100% orange juice — I prefer high-pulp for a richer flavor.
- Light brown sugar — I tested many sweeteners: white sugar, light brown sugar, a combination of both, honey, and maple syrup. Each gives a slightly different flavor, so use what you like. Mr. JOC loves equal parts white and brown sugar; my kids prefer white sugar only.
- Orange zest — Adds bright citrus flavor and doubles as a garnish.
- Grated Ginger — Adds a nice kick and depth of flavor.
- Cinnamon Stick — Adds warmth and a wonderful aroma. You can substitute ground cinnamon, but stir it in after removing the sauce from the heat.
- Water — Adds a little extra liquid. For a stronger orange flavor, swap the water for more orange juice.
How to Make Cranberry Sauce
- Combine the cranberries, brown sugar, orange juice, and water in a small saucepan.
- Bring to a simmer over medium heat.
- Reduce the heat and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have popped, about 8 minutes.
- Add the cinnamon stick, orange zest, and grated ginger. Cook until thickened to your liking, about 1–2 minutes.
- Remove from heat. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Storage Tips
Let the sauce cool completely, then transfer to an airtight container. It keeps in the refrigerator for up to 2 weeks. I always make it ahead when we host Thanksgiving or Christmas. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months.
Variations
- Citrus swaps. Replace half the orange juice with lemon or blood orange juice for a different citrus note.
- Spice swaps. A pinch of cardamom adds a floral, slightly exotic note.
- Sweetner swaps. Maple syrup gives a deeper, more caramel-like sweetness—great for a natural sweetener option. Honey adds a floral note and pairs beautifully with the ginger.
- Flavor boosters. A splash of bourbon or port adds richness and depth. A teaspoon of vanilla extract makes it taste almost dessert-like.
What to Do with Leftover Cranberry Sauce
Beyond turkey or roast chicken, there are so many ways to enjoy the leftovers:
- Spread it like jam – My son swears a turkey sandwich with this sauce is unbeatable. For a vegetarian option, try it on grilled cheese or a chickpea sandwich. The tanginess takes it to another level.
- Use it as a chutney – Pair it with brie or camembert on a charcuterie board. So good.
- Give it as a gift – Preserved in small jars, it makes a lovely holiday gift or a thoughtful contribution to a dinner party.
- Stir it into stuffing – Or use it as a sauce for a vegetarian nut loaf.
- Serve it with pork or potatoes – Try it alongside Japanese Pork Roast for a delicious twist.

Easy Orange Ginger Cranberry Sauce

Ingredients
- 12 oz cranberries (1 bag, 3–4 cups, fresh or frozen)
- ¾ cup light brown sugar
- ¾ cup orange juice (skip the concentrate; freshly squeezed works great too—2 sweet oranges should give you just the right amount)
- 2 tsp orange zest (lightly packed, use more for garnish)
- 1 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
- ⅛ tsp grated ginger (with juice; add more to taste)
Instructions
- Gather all the ingredients. Pick through 12 oz cranberries and discard any squishy ones. Transfer to a small saucepan.

- If you haven't, grate the ginger (I use a microplane) and measure ⅛ tsp grated ginger. Zest the orange (I use a citrus zester) until you have 2 tsp orange zest and set aside.

- Add ¾ cup orange juice and ¾ cup light brown sugar. Stir to combine.

- Bring to a simmer over medium heat. Reduce to medium-low and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, until the cranberries have popped, about 8 minutes.

- Add 1 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks, orange zest, and grated ginger. Cook until thickened to your liking, 1–2 minutes.

- Remove from heat. The sauce will continue to thicken as it cools. Serve warm or at room temperature.

To Store
- Cool completely, then cover tightly and refrigerate for up to 2 weeks. To freeze, cool completely and freeze for up to 3 months.
