I’ve been reading manga since my mother brought back a bundle of Japanese children’s magazines when I was in elementary school. I think I’ve been following Doraemon, the silly robot cat, for at least 40 years! But my favorite manga is Rurouni Kenshin, sometimes known in the US as Samurai X. It’s historical fiction, set in the Meiji Era, as traditional samurai struggle to adjust to the modernization of Japan. Kenshin, a former assassin, tries to make up for his past deeds by looking after his friends and helping people in trouble, but his old enemies come back to take revenge on him. Lots of romance and humor as well! And Kenshin himself is pretty cute. I recommend the series highly.

I have both watched anime and read manga. Out of all the favorites I have, I am currently obsessed with “Toukyou Ghoul” and its sequel “Tokyo Ghoul:re”. The author creates a work of art on a whole new level by giving the readers a different perspective of the world through the main character, a human, who experiences a turn of misfortunate events, and becomes a man-eating ghoul. The main character’s struggle of maintaining his humanity against the nature of a ghoul makes the reader pity him. However, we find that even in his trying situation, he is still able to find a “family” away from the troubles of both his life as a human, and as a ghoul. Ishida Sui’s work not only demonstrates the theme of hope, but also the need to conform, the identity crisis some people find in themselves, the evils and the goodness that exist in every person, etc. The author tops the moving story with his oustanding artwork, comedy, and clever inexplicit hints that prove to be useful for future references! I just love it!!
