{Worldwide} Win a brand new JOC sweatshirt that comes in white or black! This giveaway is open to a worldwide audience.
JOC has a brand-new logo! If you’ve been following our blog for a while, you might have noticed the presence of a graceful Japanese lady in the kimono on the header of our web pages. The logo, designed by the talented Kaori Drome, is a small labor of love. And it is the first time I feel truly connected to a visual image that speaks of Just One Cookbook. So we wanted to celebrate this special moment with a new JOC sweatshirt giveaway!
JOC Logo Design
For those who are curious about the meaning of the design, here are some features:
- An ukiyo-e (浮世絵) style lady in the kimono is reading a cookbook while she cooks with saibashi (cooking chopsticks) in her hand.
- The cookbook cover says “one” (壱) in kanji.
- The red stamp represents Japanese hanko stamps, showing again “one” (壱) in kanji.
- The Japanese letter below Just One Cookbook says ジャストワンクックブック in katakana.
Is this lady in the kimono supposed to be me? Maybe! When it comes to Japanese cuisine, I enjoy learning more about traditional and classic styles of cooking and techniques. As I see the importance of preserving one’s culture through its culinary treasures that have withstanding time, it motivates me to share and advocate for what defines the essence of my cuisine.
Surely, cuisines evolve and we welcome creativity, but I believe we can stay true to the ethos. I hope you enjoy the new logo and what I share on Just One Cookbook.

I usually come to the Just One Cookbook website looking for a specific recipe such as gyudon or ton katsu. I also research ingredient substitutions fairly frequently, it’s a great resource!!
I usually look more for a dessert or baking recipe.
Thank you for this—the shirts turned out lovely! I always come here for dinner ideas or recipes for a leftover ingredient. I love bookmarking the meals to come back to in the future.
I love JOC and I typically use the recipes as a framework for whatever dish it was that I searched. I’m not huge on using recipes but I treat them as a starting point and incorporate my own style and palate. Usually I look to it to find what ingredients are typically required for a dish and then I seee what I have and what I might need.
I’m often looking for refreshers or revisiting favorite recipes. Nami’s recipes are the cornerstone of how our house cooks and eats. Lots of healthy and simple dinner ideas!
Your recipes are just the best! I often look for a good main dish so we can make something new and comforting for dinner.
I use your recipes regularly and thoroughly enjoy them. Thank you for sharing . You and your team are the best.
Just about all the ingredients that Nami uses I can easily purchase locally. I use the JOC site to see if I can change up what I normally will make to what Nami would make.
Some recipe inspiration and background info about ingredients
Thank you Nami! I love your website and we (my husband and I) come here often to get inspiration on what can be done as quick dinner on a busy week night.
I came here for the recipes so I can learn to cook . Thanks.
🙂 Thank you for doing this!
When I reference your recipes, I am usually looking for a dish that isn’t too complicated to make – but still full of flavor. Usually these are meals for lunch or dinner!
I come here when the newsletter has a new dinner idea for my family or if I have an ingredient that I’m trying to learn more recipes for like Japanese Eggplant.
I usually am looking for the proportions/recipe for a dish I know of but don’t have in my memory (like my mother seems to).
There are two different instances when I look up JOC. One is when I already have a Japanese dish in mind and need to check the ingredients/ratios/technique. The other is when I’m looking for inspiration for quick, easy and healthy meals! Thank you for being an amazing resource 🙂 Your recipes never disappoint.
I am 88 years old and your recipes brings back some wonderful memories. Your updated recipes are a great help.
