Just One Cookbook celebrates its 7 year blog anniversary with a big international giveaway!
January 1, 2018 was JOC’s seven year blog anniversary. Seven years! If this blog was our baby (which would make it our third baby), he/she would be in 2nd grade! Wow, I can hardly believe how fast these seven years have gone, and how much our community has grown.
Heartfelt Thank You from Us
Mr. JOC and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for spending your precious time reading our blog, watching our videos, following our social media, and trying out our recipes!
Among all the resources available online or in publication for Japanese cooking, we feel very humble and honored that you continue to choose our website and YouTube channel to learn Japanese cooking from us. We are truly thankful for your ongoing, incredible support of our work!
Seven Items We Use Everyday & Can’t Live Without
Me (in no specific order)
- MacBook Pro (and iPhone) – Upside of having a MacBook Pro is I can work anywhere and everywhere, and downside is I am working all the time.
- Flat Whisk – I get asked about the whisk that I use in my videos EVERY SINGLE DAY. Who knew it would be the most in-demand kitchen item? Well, the whisk is sure very useful. I use it every day for whisking eggs, salad dressing or sauce.
- Korean Spoon – Surprised? I’m a huge fan of Korean stainless spoon sets. My mom is a fan first and she got me hooked on these durable spoons. It’s so easy to eat and cook with them.
- Pentel EnerGel 0.7 – These are my go-to pens. You can find them on my desk and in my bag.
- Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug – I sip Japanese Iced Coffee, Cold Brew , or tea all day long in this mug. It goes with me everywhere I go.
- TOMS Shoes – Their shoes, boots, sandals are so comfortable and awesome!
- Microfiber Hair Towel – I do not like blowing hair at all… so these towels are like my hair dryer (I’m serious!).
Mr. JOC
- Coffee Server & Dripper for Japanese Iced Coffee – Nami got me hooked on a love for coffee to start each day. Nothing beats the flavor and smoothness of Japanese iced coffee in the morning!
- Axe hair wax – This is how I start each morning, with messy hair.
- iPad Pro – Even though iPads are not as popular as they used to be, I still love my iPad Pro. While Nami loves her Macbook Pro and takes it everywhere with her, iPad Pro does the job for me. Whether it is to check emails, to read a book, or to watch movies on the airplane, iPad Pro makes a great companion.
- Uniqlo Airism T-shirts – I just love these airism t-shirts. They feel like you’re wearing… air.
- Adidas Cloudfoam Shoes – One of the daily rituals we do as a family is we go on walks around the neighborhood everyday after dinner. These Adidas cloudfoam shoes are our favorite.
- Kind Bars – I used to love eating different types of bread for breakfast. To cut dow my carb intake, I started eating Kind Bars with my coffee. What’s great about Kind Bars is there are so many flavors so I don’t get tired of them. Now only if I can stop the kids from raiding my Kind Bars!
- Electric Tea Kettle – Nami and I drink tea all day. Depending on the type of tea, they should be brewed at different temperatures. We love this electric tea kettle as it comes with different temperature settings. For a cleaner taste, we also recommend buying a stainless steel kettle rather than a plastic kettle.

What a discovery JOC is. I have found new interest in cooking, especially since I have always loved Japanese food. Catches the eyes first, then irresistible on the palate. And just as an aside, that wisk….. Ive had one for 30 years and its still going strong. Some things you never tire of and Japanese cuisine is at the top of the list
I’m new to the blog and can’t wait to try some of the recipes 🙂
First impressions, I love how you can sort recipes by cooking method. I am always looking for baking recipes in particular. Love the “How To” section too. This will be very useful to me.
Since I’ve found your blog a few months ago (I was trying to learn how to make sukiyaki), I’ve really fallen in-love with it. There’s really a lot to explore and I’m still working my way through it all. It’s become my go-to site for recipes.
I like that you have videos (even though I’ve yet to watch, I normally just go straight to the recipe). I’m sure I will eventually when I’m confused about how things are done. Over all the recipes themselves are explained well, and all have been delicious and came out as expected.
I’m originally from Nagasaki and currently living in the U.K.. l love watching your videos and reading your recipes as I don’t often cook proper Japanese foods as the ingredients could be costly or not easy to get. I show all the pictures, especially of the Bento boxes, to our children. They absolutely love your bento box ideas. Your blog reminds me of the time in Japan and makes me feel Natsukashii. Please keep on posting lovely recipes.
Hello. When I Read a manga and I stumble upon a recipe of a Less known Japanese dish I can always count on your website to find a recipe and an explanation. I love it! <3
I also love how Clear and elegant your videos are; if I could make a suggestion it would be to make them at a slightly faster pace, I guess.
I am from Italy, usually giveaways are never International, so I'm Pretty excited yours is! Thank you for thinking of your readers from other countries and best luck with your blog 🙂
I’ve only recently found your blog but find it immensely enjoyable. My husband and I travelled to Japan in 2015 for our honeymoon and we have been revisiting some of the meals we’ve had over there by making the recipes. It’s a brilliant way to relive some of the best times we’ve had, so thank you very much for the recipes!
I find your blog very interesting. I alsways follow it thru my facebook newfeeds. I will include the map of Japan in the introduction of each video showing from which area the food is thought to originate, only the first few seconds will do. I would also include other dishes from movies/tv series apart from city/region. I know that you and I already exchanged some correspondence about shinya shokudo, and I also watched on your blog some of its dishes that you started including. I don’t know of any other movies except for Tampopo and Ramen girl. Keep up the good work. I am an avid fan of your blog especially when it comes to seafood
I love Japanese food, thanks to your lovely recipes, I can make my own. Been reading your blogs for your blog for years. Sorry, I just subscribeed today.
already subscribes – love JOC
I’ve followed you for quite a while now, having married into a Japanese household. Your recipes have been a life saver!
As a suggestion, could you add some tips on Japanese table etiquette or how to eat some of the recipes? Or more kid friendly recipe! For joining in the kitchen to prep or just eat.
Congrats on the anniversary!! I’ve been following your blog and have tried my hand at quite a few of your recipes, thank you so much. As someone who mostly cooks for myself, I think it’d be cool if you could have more recipes that are meant for one person and is enough for maybe one or two servings instead of for a large amount.
Thanks and congrats!
My fiancé and I love reading your recipes and posts!
