Just One Cookbook celebrates its 7 year blog anniversary with a big international giveaway!
January 1, 2018 was JOC’s seven year blog anniversary. Seven years! If this blog was our baby (which would make it our third baby), he/she would be in 2nd grade! Wow, I can hardly believe how fast these seven years have gone, and how much our community has grown.
Heartfelt Thank You from Us
Mr. JOC and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for spending your precious time reading our blog, watching our videos, following our social media, and trying out our recipes!
Among all the resources available online or in publication for Japanese cooking, we feel very humble and honored that you continue to choose our website and YouTube channel to learn Japanese cooking from us. We are truly thankful for your ongoing, incredible support of our work!
Seven Items We Use Everyday & Can’t Live Without
Me (in no specific order)
- MacBook Pro (and iPhone) – Upside of having a MacBook Pro is I can work anywhere and everywhere, and downside is I am working all the time.
- Flat Whisk – I get asked about the whisk that I use in my videos EVERY SINGLE DAY. Who knew it would be the most in-demand kitchen item? Well, the whisk is sure very useful. I use it every day for whisking eggs, salad dressing or sauce.
- Korean Spoon – Surprised? I’m a huge fan of Korean stainless spoon sets. My mom is a fan first and she got me hooked on these durable spoons. It’s so easy to eat and cook with them.
- Pentel EnerGel 0.7 – These are my go-to pens. You can find them on my desk and in my bag.
- Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug – I sip Japanese Iced Coffee, Cold Brew , or tea all day long in this mug. It goes with me everywhere I go.
- TOMS Shoes – Their shoes, boots, sandals are so comfortable and awesome!
- Microfiber Hair Towel – I do not like blowing hair at all… so these towels are like my hair dryer (I’m serious!).
Mr. JOC
- Coffee Server & Dripper for Japanese Iced Coffee – Nami got me hooked on a love for coffee to start each day. Nothing beats the flavor and smoothness of Japanese iced coffee in the morning!
- Axe hair wax – This is how I start each morning, with messy hair.
- iPad Pro – Even though iPads are not as popular as they used to be, I still love my iPad Pro. While Nami loves her Macbook Pro and takes it everywhere with her, iPad Pro does the job for me. Whether it is to check emails, to read a book, or to watch movies on the airplane, iPad Pro makes a great companion.
- Uniqlo Airism T-shirts – I just love these airism t-shirts. They feel like you’re wearing… air.
- Adidas Cloudfoam Shoes – One of the daily rituals we do as a family is we go on walks around the neighborhood everyday after dinner. These Adidas cloudfoam shoes are our favorite.
- Kind Bars – I used to love eating different types of bread for breakfast. To cut dow my carb intake, I started eating Kind Bars with my coffee. What’s great about Kind Bars is there are so many flavors so I don’t get tired of them. Now only if I can stop the kids from raiding my Kind Bars!
- Electric Tea Kettle – Nami and I drink tea all day. Depending on the type of tea, they should be brewed at different temperatures. We love this electric tea kettle as it comes with different temperature settings. For a cleaner taste, we also recommend buying a stainless steel kettle rather than a plastic kettle.

Nami, I’ve been reading your blog for months now, mainly to learn how to cook local dishes since I moved to Japan a year ago. It’s been a lifesaver and has really opened up my world to the local cuisine.
go well with what side dishes for bento, just to help plan meals ahead for busy people.
But i love your blog as it is. Many more delicious meals to come Nami!
Started following JOC when I saw it as a feed from a friend. like Mrs. JOC, I’m based in the SF Bay Area.
Nami, I’ve been reading your blog for months now, mainly to learn how to cook local dishes since I moved to Japan a year ago. It’s been a lifesaver and has really opened up my world to the local cuisine.
I would love to see a section with suggestions on what main dishes go well with what side dishes for bento, just to help plan meals ahead for busy people.
But i love your blog as it is. Many more delicious meals to come Nami!
Hi, I am a new follower of your blog. My family and I are stationed here in Japan and we love everything here thats why we chose to stay here for another 4 years. I find your blog helpful especially when I want to eat japanese food and dont want to go out since it’s snowing. And my family loves japanese food, especially the kids, they love curry, so it’s nice that I can learn to cook them through your blog. Also, I liked it when you cooked adobo with a twist, we are Filipino so I tried cooking that for a change and loved it. Thank you!
Congrats on 7 years! Found you guys when searching for things to do in Japan for a trip! From NY :)! Continued to follow for the amazing Japanese recipies 🙂
Hello! Warm greetings on your 7th anniversary!
I’ve been a fan for years. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and learning new recipes.
I live in Japan with my family and your recipes have inspired me to make Japanese meals or Japanese-inspired meals and bento for my family. I was also thrilled that you have included a chicken adobo recipe in your blog. Yes, I’m a Filipino and adobo is quintessentially Filipino.
I look forward to seeing recipes on how to make tofu (and tofu products), fresh soba, tonkotsu ramen stock, furikake, fresh ramen noodles, and how to cook with uniquely Japanese ingredients like shirataki, konyaku, yuzu, sake kasu, shio koji , etc. it would also be really interesting to learn more about food-related history and culture and regional specialties especially those least know ones. It would also be exciting to learn snippets of agriculture practices/information as it’s related to food as well , example, how true is it that wagyu cattle are massaged (myth or truth?) , foraging culture , how different are dairy and eggs in Japan etc.
Thank you for your time! And thank you for inspiring all of us to cook and eat well.
More power to you and your blog!
Regards,
Antonette
I am a follower of your facebook account and subscriber too and love every recipe you post. I live in Japan and love the food here but I don’t know how to prepare it. With your post of japanese recipes, now I can cook my fav japanese dishes.
I use so many of your recipes! Just this week we made the hiroshima okonomiyaki, the curry roux, and the Japanese beef curry (without the beef but with the crispy baked chicken)! I’m especially happy with the way you make everything from scratch. And also the recipes for Japanese sauces we can’t buy here. Thank you!
Hi! I’m a new-ish reader (about 6 months). I’m from Los Angeles but my husband and I moved to Japan for his work in May. I found your blog in the fall when I was looking for some entry level Japanese recipes. We don’t live in a major metro area, so the nearby grocery stores haven’t had a lot of my normal US ingredients. Instead of being too bummed by that, I decided to try to embrace the amazing Japanese ingredients I could find and learn to cook more Japanese food instead. Your blog has been a real life saver for me to be able to find some great Japanese recipes in English. Thank you!
I’m from Canada!!!
I am Joan from sinagpore. I really like simple recipes that I can use after work. Like one hr whipped up meals or one pot ideas. Which is why I like following your recipes. I’m interested in instant pot but it’s too costly for me . Hope to win it and use it to cook for my family.
Yay a giveaway for all of us non-americans as well ????
I really like that whenever I hear about a delicious Japanese dish, I have always been able to find a recipe for it on your blog! The recipes of yours that I use the most is the recipe for dumpling wrappers – we don’t have a lot of shops with Asian groceries where I live, so it’s so much easier to make dumpling wrappers yourself than to buy the premade ones ????
Your blog is really nice and easy to navigate on – my only suggestion is to maybe have a metric system measurement option. Like how some Americans have problems with the metric system I also almost always mess up the recipes when I have to use cups, ounces etc. But that is the only suggestion I have, otherwise your blog is perfect for my Japanese food needs ????
Thank you for making my dinners less boring!
Pretty soon will be my birthday so any of these would be great!
I enjoy seeing your recipes on Facebook!
