Just One Cookbook celebrates its 7 year blog anniversary with a big international giveaway!
January 1, 2018 was JOC’s seven year blog anniversary. Seven years! If this blog was our baby (which would make it our third baby), he/she would be in 2nd grade! Wow, I can hardly believe how fast these seven years have gone, and how much our community has grown.
Heartfelt Thank You from Us
Mr. JOC and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts for spending your precious time reading our blog, watching our videos, following our social media, and trying out our recipes!
Among all the resources available online or in publication for Japanese cooking, we feel very humble and honored that you continue to choose our website and YouTube channel to learn Japanese cooking from us. We are truly thankful for your ongoing, incredible support of our work!
Seven Items We Use Everyday & Can’t Live Without
Me (in no specific order)
- MacBook Pro (and iPhone) – Upside of having a MacBook Pro is I can work anywhere and everywhere, and downside is I am working all the time.
- Flat Whisk – I get asked about the whisk that I use in my videos EVERY SINGLE DAY. Who knew it would be the most in-demand kitchen item? Well, the whisk is sure very useful. I use it every day for whisking eggs, salad dressing or sauce.
- Korean Spoon – Surprised? I’m a huge fan of Korean stainless spoon sets. My mom is a fan first and she got me hooked on these durable spoons. It’s so easy to eat and cook with them.
- Pentel EnerGel 0.7 – These are my go-to pens. You can find them on my desk and in my bag.
- Insulated Stainless Steel Travel Mug – I sip Japanese Iced Coffee, Cold Brew , or tea all day long in this mug. It goes with me everywhere I go.
- TOMS Shoes – Their shoes, boots, sandals are so comfortable and awesome!
- Microfiber Hair Towel – I do not like blowing hair at all… so these towels are like my hair dryer (I’m serious!).
Mr. JOC
- Coffee Server & Dripper for Japanese Iced Coffee – Nami got me hooked on a love for coffee to start each day. Nothing beats the flavor and smoothness of Japanese iced coffee in the morning!
- Axe hair wax – This is how I start each morning, with messy hair.
- iPad Pro – Even though iPads are not as popular as they used to be, I still love my iPad Pro. While Nami loves her Macbook Pro and takes it everywhere with her, iPad Pro does the job for me. Whether it is to check emails, to read a book, or to watch movies on the airplane, iPad Pro makes a great companion.
- Uniqlo Airism T-shirts – I just love these airism t-shirts. They feel like you’re wearing… air.
- Adidas Cloudfoam Shoes – One of the daily rituals we do as a family is we go on walks around the neighborhood everyday after dinner. These Adidas cloudfoam shoes are our favorite.
- Kind Bars – I used to love eating different types of bread for breakfast. To cut dow my carb intake, I started eating Kind Bars with my coffee. What’s great about Kind Bars is there are so many flavors so I don’t get tired of them. Now only if I can stop the kids from raiding my Kind Bars!
- Electric Tea Kettle – Nami and I drink tea all day. Depending on the type of tea, they should be brewed at different temperatures. We love this electric tea kettle as it comes with different temperature settings. For a cleaner taste, we also recommend buying a stainless steel kettle rather than a plastic kettle.
What are your recent favorite things?

Hi, am from sunny Singapore . I recently found your blog by googling for Japanese recipes! Absolutely love your ramen egg recipe! I’ve made it once & it came out perfect! Love all Japanese food! So pls keep posting more recipes for me to try! They’re simple enough to follow !
Hello Nami! I’ve been following your blog for a few years now. Your recipes are so easy to follow and my family loves them! I enjoying watching your videos and your step by step instructions by pictures. It’s a great idea that you do separate pages for the travel guides. I can’t wait To visit your home country this March! I’ll be trying some of your recommended spots. Keep up the great work 🙂
I’ve made several recipes from the blog. Keep up the good work!
It would be fantastic if there was a JOC app!
I love your easy to understand video recipes. So glad I found you!!!!!
Hi Nami and Mr JOC!
I have followed you guys for years, on the blog, instagram, and facebook. You are always my go to Japanese food recipe blog, and I have made quite a number of it over the years. From Takoyaki, Okonomiyaki, Dorayaki, and things that ended with -Don, to name a few 😉
I also shared my cooking on IG with #justonecookbook and you always took the time to comment on my post, as a fan you made me feel so loved! I am an avid japanese food fan, even though I have never been to Japan. I made your recipe at least 1 – 2 times per week, and friends who tried my food (and have been to Japan) always complimented on how authentic the taste is!
I can’t suggest anything much because the way you two run this blog is near impeccable to me, From the way you include measurements in the step-by-step description (so I don’t have to scroll back up), to detailed explanation about ingredients/substitute, and technique. You guys really show so much love and dedication to your 3rd baby.
Though if I could be selfish, I want to see more ramen recipe, including ramen with no soup. Also, let me say thank you because apparently you are also a fan of Midnight Diner on Netflix, and I have made all of the recipes you have updated except for sauteed yam and Umeshu. I was so excited when you announced Midnight Diner Recipe series, because that show made me hungry!
Keep up the good work for years to come, I will always be your loyal fan.
Thank you for sharing these wonderful recipes. I will like to buy a copy of your cookbook, but I am not sure if I can find it in Singapore.
Hi Mr. JOC and family, thank you so much for this worldwide giveaway.
I am new to your blog and I come from Indonesia (residing in Australia now). I found your blog through searching on Youtube about Oyakodon recipe and also Japanese Cheesecake recipe.
If I can give you a suggestion as a newbie to your blog, maybe you can make a slideshow of your linked recipes (below your logo and Homepage Menu).
Thank you.
Hello,
I’m from the Netherlands. I found out about ‘just one cookbook’ when I was searching for a clear video about how to make onigiri. I loved how clear it was. Since than I follow Just one cookbook on Facebook. Today I made the Gyoza recipe. Loved it. The directions were spot on. Thank you for giving me the ability to cook some of my favorites. Please keep going.
I have been following your blog since 2013. Really love the way you present your recipes. I’d like you to work on more easier and quick recipes.
love your recipes and videos. i learned so so much the last 3 years from here <3
greetings from switzerland,
kate
I found out about your blog through @bundtlust. I had googled Japanese recipes before but I was always intimidated and wouldn’t make them. Your recipes seemed clear so I gave them a try. Every single recipe I’ve made from your blog are now family favorites. We even have cucumber sushi rolls often now that I’ve been following your recipe for sushi rice. The teriyaki sauce is a favorite too. But the one tip that changed the kids dinner wasn’t toasting the panko crumbs in a little oil in a pan before using it as a coating. Now oven baked chicken and fish have a fried flavor and look without filling the house with fried oil smells. Thank you!!
I really enjoy your block. I just hope that you will continue to be authentic instead of taking the shortcut ofly e TrueType Japanese.
Hello Nami!
I found your youtube channel and really liked how the recipes were simple and easy to understand.
I love home cooking and you made me understand the basics cooking of japanese food which i really enjoy.
I prefer youtube content as i love to watch how food is made, therefore have visited your website only today.
Keep on inspiring!
7 years! Congrats to you Nami and to Mr JOC 🙂
I started to follow your blog just about a year ago when i wanted to find some authentic Japanese recipes. I am so happy that i found you!
I’m from Trinidad and Tobago and generally the only japanese food we can get here is sushi so it’s great to try out your recipes for something new and fun sometimes.
It’s a bonus as well to see all your travel photos with the adventures of your family on instagram. I love it all! Please don’t stop! In fact, more posts please 🙂 🙂 🙂
I’m new to the blog. Found you via Facebook, and I’m from Durham in the UK 🙂
