Here are the recipes you need from Netflix’s Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories – Season 2! Cook your beloved Japanese diner foods, enjoy the show, and relive your fondest memories in Japan.
Last year we hosted a most adventurous cooking event where readers were invited to make every dish showcased in the Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Season 1). The challenge received quite a buzz and we had readers sending in requests for the next season already. So we’re back again this year. Here, you can find every dish that is featured on Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Season 2) from Episodes 1-10 to cook along with.
There will be chicken fried rice, salmon & mushrooms, plum rice ball, tamagoyaki, and even instant curry ramen to savor. Whether you’re about to start the show or already finished the entire season, we hope you have fun trying them out.
Let’s Cook, Eat & Watch!
PS: We’re still putting together the recipes for the last two episodes. Once they are ready, we’ll update them here. Please check back later.
Episode 1 – Chicken Fried Rice
This popular Chicken Fried Rice is a western-style rice dish cooked with sweet and tangy ketchup-based sauce. It brings a nostalgic vibe to many Japanese and it’s kid-friendly!
Episode 2 – Chicken Cheese Katsu
A much tastier Japanese version of chicken tender, this Chicken Cheese Katsu is filled with melt-in-your-mouth molten cheese and coated with extra crunchy panko breadcrumbs.
Episode 3 – Plum Rice Ball
These delicious plum rice balls are made with fluffy Japanese rice, chopped pickled plums, and sesame seeds. It’s savory, nutty, and tangy at the same time. We recommend making the rice balls for your ‘Japanese drama night’ in the backyard!
Episode 4 – Fried Chicken Wings
Fried chicken wings are a classic appetizer to serve for a casual get-together or movie night. Learn the simple tips to cook them right from your kitchen!
Episode 5 – Yakisoba Pan (Yakisoba Dog)
Savory stir-fried noodles in a hot dog bun? Oh yes, this ultimate combo is going to satisfy when you are extra hungry.
Episode 6 – Salmon & Mushrooms
Light yet flavorful, this Salmon & Mushrooms recipe is a great dish for a busy weeknight meal. All you have to do is toss a few ingredients into a foil, wrap it up like a parcel, and steamed over in a frying pan. A healthy dinner is done in 20 minutes!
Episode 7 – Kitsune Udon
With a soothing, slurp-worthy broth, this udon noodle soup is one of the most classic Japanese noodle dishes you can enjoy year-round.
Episode 8 – Curry Ramen
Have you tried instant ramen with leftover curry? The Master in Midnight Diner shows us how to put together a bowl of comforting noodles that looks just as good or maybe better than a take-out.
Episode 9 – Sweet Rolled Omelet
Japanese Sweet Rolled Omelet is made by rolling several thin layers of fried egg, on top of the others, and shaped into a log. It’s delicious as a breakfast dish, a side for bento, or a standalone snack. Follow my tips, and you’ll learn how to make beautiful tamagoyaki in no time!
10 – Crab and Toshikoshi Soba
Cross over into the New Year with a Japanese tradition by eating a piping hot bowl of soba noodle soup called Toshikoshi Soba. This simple Japanese noodle dish will melt away the hardship of the past year and welcome the new journey ahead!
JOC Cooking Challenge – Midnight Diner: Tokyo Stories (Season 2)
Leave a comment below if you’ll be joining us in this Season 2 cooking challenge! We’d love to know which is your favorite episode, why, and which recipe(s) you’d make.
In case you missed it, here is the recipe roundup for Season 1.
I just discovered Midnite Diner and have watched all the seasons and movies at least twice. I was so happy to find your recipes – especially for the pork miso soup. I couldn’t figure out what the one ingredient was – turned out to be a yam cake! I wish they would continue with the series. I don’t speak Japanese and have never been but the stories are so heartwarming and funny. And educational! I didn’t know about Japan. Some may have been just for TV and some may be real but it was enough to get me interested in learning more. Thank you again for the recipes. I hope there are more recipes to come and more episodes.
Hi Carol! Thank you very much for your kind feedback and for sharing your story with us!
Yes! We enjoyed watching Midnight Diner. We hope the episode continues and we can share recipes with you too!
Hi I love the recipes you’ve already posted but will you be posting the recipes from the original 3 seasons of Midnight Diner??
Hi TA, Yes! Thank you for asking! We are working on it! Stay tuned…🙂
Hello! Do you plan on adding episode 9 and 10 soon? Thank you, I love your recipes!
Hi Daniel! Yes!!!
We hope to share it soon. Thank you very much for checking!
Sorry! In Season Two, episode 10, even though the episode is called Crab and Toshikoshi Soba, the dish he makes at the beginning of the episode, he is calling a noodle gratin! Do you have a recipe for that? It has a cream base, cheese on top, and is baked in the oven. Thanks!
ps: he must make the Crab and Toshikoshi Soba later on in the episode, like the recipe you have featured here for Toshikoshi Soba!
Hi Joyce, Thank you very much for reading our post!
Nami has many Gratin recipes, and we hope you find one that you would like! https://www.justonecookbook.com/search/?q=gratin
In Season 2, episode 10, he cooks a crab and Toshikoshi Soba, which is in a cream sauce with cheese added, and baked in the oven, but what you picture here is a toshikoshi soba that is more like a ramen soup…no cream or cheese, and is not baked, but prepared as a clearish noodle soup. Why was the recipe changed, and do you have the recipe for the item featured in the show? It looked so good! Yours does as well, but I was really hoping to get the recipe for the one featured on Midnight Diner. Thanks!
I was just watching Episode 21 Season 3. I am looking forward to this one too. I really enjoy the show. I did make the one of Curry and noodles and liked it very much. Thank you for bringing the show to my attention.
Hi Barbara!
We are so happy to hear you enjoyed the show and the recipes!!!
Thank you very much for your kind feedback!😊
Love the Japanese movies you suggested!
Delighted, thank you!
Hi Patricia!
Thank you for your kind feedback! We are happy to hear you enjoyed it!😊
I was confused because these recipes didn’t match the series I was watching on Netflix. I just realized it is “Midnight Diner” and not the “MD: Tokyo Stories”
one. Do you have a collection for the first MD season?
Hi Heather!
Yes, we do! https://www.justonecookbook.com/netflix-midnight-diner-tokyo-stories-season-1-recipes/.
Thank you so much for checking the recipes!
Looking forward to the recipe on the rolled omlet.
On another note: When is the cookbook coming?
Hi Chris! Sorry, the sweet rolled omelet right? I have the recipe but I haven’t shot yet… hopefully soon! The cookbook… no plan for now. 🙂
What season/episode featured the miso eggplant dish?
Hi Dean! Ummm… I’m not too sure. Sorry I can’t recall at this moment. 🙁
Tokyo stories S2:E9 Sweet Rolled Omelet 16:32 in netflix
Thanks James!
Hi James! Thanks!!! You remember it well. 😀
OMG! I’m obsessed with this show as soon as Netflix released it! I have been watching both seasons multiple times and that’s just not me! I antsy pants to have more released. I was really hoping to find these in NHK World Japan. I’m so very happy you’re doing this! God Bless Your Heart!
Hi Dhila! I’m so happy you are a MD fan too! Hope you enjoy cooking all these recipes while we wait for the new seasons!
Are the Midnight Diner Cookbooks (Seasons 1-3) available for purchase in English? If so, where can I buy them?
Hi Stephanie! I don’t think so… This one is in Japanese.

Thank you Robert! Me too! It’s been fun recreating recipes from the show!
I agree with Matthew B – I would buy the cookbook for each season / every episode! Thank you for doing the recipe series based on this show!
You are welcome! Hope you enjoy!
I would buy a physical cook book for each season! I’m glad you are doing this
Hi Matthew! It would be cool to have a cookbook (I think there is in Japanese?). Hope you enjoy making MD recipes!
