Just One Cookbook celebrates the 9th year blog anniversary with a big worldwide giveaway! Win attractive prizes, including Kitchen Aid 6 Qt mixer, premium Japanese Kikuichi knife, Instant Pot, Just One Cookbook tote bag and Thermapen.
January 1, 2020, was Just One Cookbook’s 9th year blog anniversary. One more year to a decade! Mr. JOC and I took some time to reflect the past 9 years, and we both agree that we couldn’t get this far without your support. This amazing community exists because you’ve made it happened. Thank you.
We also want to mention that JOC is heavily supported by a wonderful team of five. They are uniquely talented with what they do, and we want to give a huge shoutout to them. They all work very hard to run this space.
Earlier this month, we brainstormed new ways to deliver content and to bring you the best work we possibly can, while still maintaining the quality to which I hold us accountable. With you by our side, we look forward to bringing more creative and great content for the future.
I wish I could make my favorite Pear & Almond Tart and share it with you. But since you’re all over the world, we decided to host a big worldwide giveaway to celebrate this moment with you.
JOC’s 9th Year Blog Anniversary – Worldwide Giveaway (5 Winners)
We’ll be selecting 5 readers from the giveaway entries. Each winner will receive:
- a specially selected kitchen tool (below)
- my e-Cookbook “Just One Cookbook – Essential Japanese Recipes”
- a JOC tote bag!
If the winner lives outside of the US, you’d receive cash in place of the gift except for the knife. Please understand that we wish we could ship all the gifts worldwide, but it would be logistically challenging.
The First Winner – KitchenAid 6 Qt. Professional 600 Series Bowl-Lift Stand Mixer – Nickel Pearl ($350) or cash
This is the workhorse for making the most delicious Japanese cheesecake, mochi, strawberry shortcake, melon pan and more.
The Second Winner – 9.5-inch Kikuichi Nickel Warikomi Damascus Knife ($330)
This is my favorite knife for everyday cooking. It is part of the Nickel Warikomi Damascus series from Kikuichi. The pattern you see on there is the 45 layer Damascus blade (AUS10 edge). The gorgeous handlebar is a rosewood handle and ebony ferrule. I fell in love with this knife at the shop and still love it the same today.
The Third Winner – Staub Cast Iron Round Cocotte, 2.75-quart, Black Matte ($168) or cash
This cast-iron heavy bottom pot is made for life. Not only it’s a beautiful handmade piece, it truly delivers exceptional cooking performance. Every cook needs one in the kitchen! I use mine to make a lot of our family’s favorite dinner which includes pork roast, teriyaki wings, braised herb chicken and more.
The Fourth Winner – Instant Pot Ultra 10-in-1 6 QT ($110) or cash
I’ve talked enough about why I love Instant Pot and how I use it for Japanese cooking. So I want you to have the same experience in using an Instant Pot. With this magical multicooker that helps speed up time, I hope you’ll find yourself cooking more healthy meals at home.
The Fifth Winner – Thermapen® Mk4 ($99) or cash
Read the reviews. You’ll learn why this thermometer is an essential tool to improve home cooking. If you’re in the kitchen with me testing recipes, you’d notice that I always have it nearby my side. It ensures accuracy and perfect results.
Full Disclosure: All the gifts are sponsored by yours truly (Just One Cookbook).

Happy 9th birthday and to at least 9 more years. I am from Germany and I don’t really remember how I first found this blog but it’s most likely that I found it while searching for some Japanese recipes. maybe it was on the search for a Ramen recipe or something like the Yakiniku sauce which since then I do regularly. At first, I did not really follow the blog but I soon realised that I often chose your recipes when looking for a specific Japanese recipe so at one point this became my goto site for everything related to Japanese cooking. I also started reading more and more information before the recipe, at the beginning I was just interested in on the recipe part at the end, cause I learned that these parts are very interesting and helpful.
For the future, I would wish for a broader basic section with a better overview of existing basic recipes like the different sauces and more recipes like making your own miso. Also, more baking recipes would also be really nice. Other than that I am really happy with this blog. Thanks for 9 years of delicious Japanese recipes.
1. I am from Atlanta, GA in the US.
2. I regularly found this site on Google while looking up Japanese recipes, and love the recipes so much I’ve subscribed! I also study the language and culture, and truly appreciate all the work that goes into each blog post.
3. I would love to see a way to tag recipes as regional/seasonal specialties (such as castella from Nagasaki, or crab season in Sapporo). This would be a wonderful way for folks traveling to know what to try!
Hi Nami! 1. My name is Betty and I am from Southern California. 2. I was looking for a sukiyaki recipe and googled yours and found it better than my mother’s (who is also Japanese)! That is rare to best my mother’s recipes. Then I was looking for a recipe for barazushi and my sister referred me to your website. It is a dish that as you noted is a family dish not found in restaurants and again, a family favorite that my mother made. After making that dish and getting referrals to your website from my two sisters, I was sold, and immediately signed up for the newsletter. 3. If you could, I would like more family type dishes, like the cold spinach, tofu purée and miso dish my grandmother used to make. I would also like to see your recommendations for substitutes for sugar and wheat flour.
1. I’m from VA, USA.
2. I was looking for a nama chocolate recipe and came across your blog. It was a few years ago.

Also please continue to discuss the distinctions between various ingredients which is so helpful when shopping for the correct type of mirin or miso or soba . Very appreciated . Hi, I’m from London
I found JOC by chance on social media quite a while back and have been following since, mostly on Instagram . I have learned so much about Japanese cuisine! Thank you for that!
I particularly enjoyed your post on Japanese rice and the different brands, as I wanted to try and cook Japanese rice at home, but had no idea what to buy and how to do it. I also enjoyed the Japan travel tips and your Instagram updates last summer.
In 2020 I would like to see more Japan travel tips and more vegetarian friendly recipes/alternatives.
Congratulations on your 9 year anniversary!
Hi Nami-San. I am from Kolkata, India. The first time I came across your channel was 2016. It’s been a wonderful journey. I was looking for the recipe of Ramen. YouTube suggested your channel and after watching one video, I binge watched all of the previous ones. And since then I have never missed one of your uploads.
As for what I would like to see more of is your restaurant recommendations in Japan. Maybe in Tokyo, Kyoto and other places that you visit. And some more from- scratch videos.
Thank you!!
Nami,
Congratulatioms on your 9th anniversary!
I am a subscriber from the Netherlands and I found you when I was googling homemade Japanese recipes. I think I was trying to find easy but delicious ramen stock recipes and I found your blog maybe 3 or 4 years ago!

Looking forward to your next posts!
Hey I’m Manon and I live in Belgium :).
I was trying to find a good gyozas recipe at the time and stumbled upon your YouTube channel. Since then my love of Japanese cuisine has become stronger and the visits on your blog multiplied.
I love the recipe but in the future I would love to see more travel guide specifically about less known Japanese village and also a detailed guide about ceramic. That would be amazing.
Thank you so much for this giveaway and happy anniversary to you.
Manon 🙂
Congratulations to 9 years of JOC! 🙂
I’m from Germany and I came across JOC a couple of months ago while reading up on some japanese recipes and couldn’t stop reading and trying out all sorts of things ever since. Thank you so much for providing us with this vast collection!
I have barely read through all the posts yet, so whatever I could wish for is probably already on this site; however, what I really enjoy is articles about traditional, crafty things like fermentation using Koji to make all sorts of things from scratch (how did your Miso turn out?), descriptions of tableware/cooking gadgets and concepts like ichiju sansai, etc.
You guys are amazing, keep up the good work! 🙂
